Social Media Analysis: Is Threads Dead?
What is Threads?
In July 2023, a new social media platform arrived to the market, Threads.
A direct competitor to X (formerly known as Twitter), it promised to provide a simple way to communicate.
Threads became the fastest platform to gain 100 million users in just five days! However, by the end of July, active users decreased to 8 million. By September, the number of users only increased by 30 million.
Is Threads still relevant?
Yes. Even though popularity plummeted since July, few million active monthly users is still a lot.
Users have raised few concerns about the usability of the app and the relevancy of their newsfeeds. But, Threads have addressed the problems and is working on making the app better.
What Threads needs to next?
The average time spent on the app went from 14 minutes in July, to only 3 minutes by August.
The numbers don’t look good.
Threads is missing intriguing content that keeps X (Twitter) users coming back. In order for Threads to be as engaging as some of its competitors, it needs to focus on user experience.
The chart below clearly shows how popular X (red) is compared to Threads (blue).

What does the future hold for Threads?
Despite the decreased popularity, Threads isn’t going anywhere.
With no current plan to expand into EU because of strict data laws, Threads will find it difficult to break into that market.
However, Threads is working on new features, which will attract new users in the future.
